Guess what friends?
No power tools or sledgehammers for this project! This is 100% fun and function PLUS anyone can do this! No skills involved.
There is one question that stresses me out more than any other: "What's for dinner?" Seriously, does my family need to eat every night?!
My solution? A huuuuuuuge chalkboard accent wall that everyone can see from the dining room, kitchen and everyday entry! If I'm asked The Question, I simply point to the board. Done.
Plus, once I write down the meals on the master board, I can easily create my shopping list.
I like having a little bit of space under the menu to add fun reminders, get the family excited for an upcoming vacation or congratulate a family member on an accomplishment! My kids love the little sliver of doodle space at the bottom.
I think you all should go buy some chalk paint and do this. Or, if you are afraid of painting a giant part of your house black, you can buy a giant framed chalkboard!
I have a feeling that once you paint one chalkboard wall, you will find another place where you have to have one.
Here are the easy step-by-step instructions. HAVE FUN!!!

Here's what you will need: You can find these materials in the paint section of your local home improvement store or order on Amazon. I will include links below.
- A high quality 1/4" nap or foam roller. Home improvement stores usually sell a set, which is a great value!
- ChalkBoard paint
- blue or green painter's tape
- 120 grit sandpaper or sanding block
- Basic white chalk for seasoning. After the board is seasoned, you can use other chalk products.
STEP 1:
Prep your walls by sanding with 120 grit sandpaper. The smoother your surface, the better your chalkboard will turn out. Wipe down with a damp cloth and allow to dry completely.
STEP 2:
Tape the perimeter of your chalkboard area with painter's tape and seal the edges by running a credit card against the edge to avoid bleeding.
STEP 3:
Using even pressure on your paint roller, apply one even coat of chalkboard paint onto the area, painting in a "W" pattern. Don't go over areas too often, and make sure that the coverage is even. Wait 4 hours before adding a second coat. After painting the second coat, remove the painter's tape while the paint is still damp. Tip: You can wrap your roller tightly in plastic wrap between coats of paint (make sure there are no air gaps)
STEP 4:
After your second coat, you need to wait 3 days before writing on your board, but NOT SO FAST!!!
STEP 5:
After three days, SEASON YOUR CHALKBOARD! I'm shouting this because if you don't season your board, you will most likely be left with permanent marks from the first thing you write. Here's how you do it: Put a piece of chalk lengthwise down on the board and gently rub it around in a circular pattern until the entire board is coated in chalk. Make sure you don't use the tip of the chalk here. It should look like this:
STEP 6:
Using a DRY paper towel or cloth, rub the chalk into the board using a circular motion
Now it should now look like this:
DONE!!! Now you can write your giant chalkboard menu and The Question will always be answered with a simple reference to the board 🙂
